New internet regulation (UK) to "keep the children safe"

... And get your ID verified by a bunch of random 3rd parties, surely not leading to a privacy disaster.

Not all sites I visit seem to have it yet, I did encounter it on BlueSky. Time to install VPN it looks like! Of all places, in the UK...

In my opinion, okay, let's keep the children safe. But if we really wanted to actually create a decent solution to the problem, there would be ways to do it. Obviously, parenting, but let's say, we don't want to do that.

There is one party which already very much verifies that we are adults by the fact we are in contract with them: the Internet Service Provider (and I think it could be agreed that on public Wifi, adult material could be kept disabled). Instead of getting people sending off ID everywhere, just require sites to include an "Adult" tag on material where such is needed. And add a bit of regulation on what parenting controls ISPs must offer (which they already do anyway). For a good measure, maybe ask them to have Adult filter On by default until the customer asks to disable it for specific devices.

Simple! And could easily be adopted by other countries as well.

Why we are keeping overcomplicating things... Phew, of course, everyone loves tracking up there. And solutions which cripple small developers, naturally. And then of course there is also the EU with its perpetually coming back Chat Control. What a disaster we live in.
